I want to sail my Bahama 25 from San Francisco to Monterey to get some new sails at the used sail warehouse there. Any tips from experienced sailors would be appreciated. What is a good time of year, how long should it take, stopovers, etc.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

I do a casual daysail to Half Moon Bay. Then from Half Moon Bay I depart well before daylight (say 3am) to make Monterey in the afternoon (it’s roughly 65nm from HMB to Monterey). Another option is to do HMB, Santa Cruz, and then Monterey. Or just do it in one overnight shot.

The hops are short enough that you can find a good weather window (provided you’re willing to wait) most times of the year but if you’re taking time off from work then I’d probably go for either late April/May/June or September/October when the chances of a good weather window are higher.
